What to drink now

Wellness Wednesday

Water.

It’s a crazy thing.

Over 70% of the earth is covered in it.

A majority of all living substance is comprised of it.

Man has fought wars over it.

Animals walk hundreds of miles to find it.

It’s elusive, yet everywhere.

Did you know that 85% of your brain is made up of water? Water. Simple H-2-O.

Yup.

85%

Amazing isn’t it. All of your intelligence, memories, and body function control is 85% water. That’s crazy when you think about it. Something as simple as water plays such an intricate role in our lives. School House Rock always told me growing up that my body was 75% water. I knew that. But my brain? Really. 85%. It’s crazy.

So, what am I getting at? Water is important. It’s necessary. It’s essential.

But there isn’t some scientific formula that you need to follow to make sure that you get ‘enough’ water in your system. Everyone is different. I use to drink to drink an ounce of water per pound of body weight per day because I was 'told' that it would keep me healthy. That was a lot of water. 200 and 65 ounces to be exact. My God, it was horrible. If I wasn’t drinking I was running to the bathroom. NOT HEALTHY.

While water is essential, there is no magic quantity that you need to consume to have optimal health. The key is to understand your thirst. To drink when you are thirsty, and to mainly drink water. I know water isn’t that exciting, but it’s essential. It doesn’t have the great flavors that a Double Shot Caramel Macchiato might have or the effervescent appeal of a diet coke, but I guess that’s the point.

It’s simple.

It’s plain.

It’s pH balanced.

It’s what your body craves.

It’s what your body needs.

It’s H-2-O.

It’s not supposed to be complicated. It’s what the caveman drank (when he could find it).

Water is the the simplest of compounds, but has the greatest affect on our lives. You can live a long time without food (3 weeks to be precise), but you can’t live long without water (3 days).

So drink water when you’re thirsty. Not flavored water. Not soda. Not coffee. Not beer. Drink water for most of the day. Carry a water bottle with you.

You’re brain will thank you.
